Dance is a fully fledged art form which ensures the physical and mental integrity. It is equally important as a science and a profession. It has multi-disciplinary relationships with locally and internationally. We could observe several main traditions of arts with our own identity and within these traditions also there are sub traditions and varied other novel dance traditions.

The Department of Cultural Affairs organizes the State Dance Festival annually to preserve those dance traditions and to pass down such traditions to future generation and to bring them to national international arena while protecting their values. One of the objectives of this festival is to showcase our own grandeur by helping the regional level dancer to gain access to international level, through the district and provincial levels. Another objective is to preserve them as a national asset. To achieve these objectives, the State Dance Festival is organized annually or once in two years.

Commemoration of World Dance Day

The International Theatre Unit of the UNESCO has declared 29th of April as the World Dance Day in the year 1982.

The date 29th April was chosen because it is the birthday of famous French dance artist Shorn-Georges Noverre, a ballet master and a great reformer of dance. In each year, the UNESCO issues a message from a world-famous dancer on this day.

The birthday of Dr. Panibharatha was declared National Dance Day in 2014 by the Ministry of Culture in recognition of his outstanding services to the art of dance.Hence, this day is the most appropriate day to commemorate our own veteran dancers who have contributed immensely for the advancement of the art of dance in Sri Lanka.
