What is Sinhala Encyclopaedia?

An encyclopaedia is a reference work or compendium of articles or entries that are often arranged alphabetically by article name. Encyclopaedia articles focus on providing knowledge easily and quickly.

The Lanka Buddhist Board who assigned with the task of Buddha Jayanthi year 2500, has established an Institution named “Sinhala Encyclopaedia Committee” for the purpose of compiling a Sinhala Encyclopaedia as per the international standards. The chairman of the committee was Professor D.E. Hettiarachchi, then Professor of Sinhala, University of Peradeniya. The Secretary was Dr.Punchibandara Sannasgala. The Sinhala Encyclopaedia Office was ceremonially declared open on 02nd May 1955 by the then Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. A. Ratnayaka. This office is now housed at No, 275, Kaduwela Road, Battaramulla. The post of Editor in Chief is held by Professor KulathilakaKumarasingha since 13.10.2016.
