Beating drums –(Playing Hevisi) is one of the important offerings associated with Buddhism in Sri Lanka. “Pohoya Hewisi” is beating of drums and instruments since the dawn of the Poya day until the end of the day.

This overnight ceremony is a ritual act performed by the Drum Gurus (Schools) who possess inherited knowledge on beating of drums.  These schools belong to Sath Koralaya, Sathara Koralaya and Kandy. Sathkoralaya tradition includes Rangallepola, Yakthalgoda, Hunupola, Ahugoda, Polgahawela schools and Sathara Koralaya tradition include Algama, Budawatta, Thumbaliyadda, Galathare, Hikgoda schools. Kandy tradition include Amunugama, Amunugolla, Malagammana, Pandivita and Thalgahagoda. The contribution made by these schools for the continuity of this great tradition is invaluable.

The ritualistic performances which evolved over the centuries has become an inevitable item in most religious and cultural festivals held in the island.

Poson – Hewisi pooja- Ritualistic drum beating as an offering (pooja) to Ruwanweliseya Dagaba was commenced in 1989. This event is jointly organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs and the District Secretariat of Anuradhapura.
