Arts Institutes (Art Schools) or Kalayathana can be considered as fine abode to develop the inborn talents of the upcoming artistes in the island. The objective of conducting these Art Institutes are to preserve, nurture and development of traditional and modern art.

Art Institutes are pioneering in ushering in a sensible generation who have a great taste of appreciation. The skills of the young artistes are escalated to higher levels and thereby the artistes of excellence are introduced to national level.

The Art Institutes are graded and offered marks and this has a strong impetus for them. Specially evaluating the upcoming young artistes at state level is an important opportunity for them.

Objectives

Encouragement and making opportunities to evaluate the upcoming young artistes who represent the Art Institutes which engage in nurturing and promotion of Sri Lankan music art. 

Commencement

The Inter Art Institute Dancing and Music State Awards Ceremony was commenced in 2018. Applications are called from the currently active Art Institutes which were registered in the Department of Cultural Affairs. Steps were put into place to conduct this event under 165 categories.  The competitions in the preliminary round is conducted at district level as per the applications received. The first place winners who are selected by a proficient Panel of Judges are called upon for the National Competition and the competitions in the final round are held in a selected common premises. The first, second and the third place winners are selected along with the winners of merit.  The awards, certificates and cash prizes are presented at the Awards Presentation Ceremony. The first ever Awards Presentation Ceremony was held in 2021.

Awards

State Awards: - Awards, Certificates and Cash prizes are presented under 165 categories for Sinhala and Tamil events. Awards are presented only to the First Place winners. Art Institutes with highest number of winners are specially evaluated and the final decision in this regard will be taken by the Advisory Board.

Details on calling applications 

  • Applications are called under 165 categories for Sinhala and Tamil contest events as per the circular instructions.
  • Applications are received only from the active Art Institutes, before 31st of January each year and which were registered in the Department of Cultural Affairs.
  • The notices on receiving applications are issued by the Music Division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, all the District/Divisional Secretariats, and website/Facebook of the Department of Cultural Affairs or by the electronic/printed media.
  • Applications are received by post, via email or may be handed over to the Department of Cultural Affairs.
