Department of Cultural Affairs

The Department of Cultural Affairs was established by the special gazette notice No. 10975 dated 26th September 1956 under the people's government headed by Hon. S.W.R.D. Bandaranayake who came into the power in 1956.

The Department renders a colossal service for the upliftment of the cultural field by formulating and implementing programmes for conservation, promotion and propagation of Literature, Arts and Cultural Affairs with Sri Lankan identity.

The Department of Cultural Affairs  contributes to render this giant mission in co-operation with various panels established under the Arts Council of Sir Lanka such as the National Drama Panel, Literary Panel ,  Dancing and Puppetry panel, Music panel and the Arts and sculpture panel. Identification of creative persons endowed with intrinsic cultural capabilities and improving their skills occupies a vital place in the departmental role.

Establishments such as the Sinhala Dictionary office, Sinhala Encyclopedia office, National Art Gallery Jhon De Silva Memorial Theater, Office of the Compilation of Mahavansa and the National Independence square , the outstanding historic memorial, help the Department to have a cultural awakening in the country.

Departmental activities are carried out under 04 divisions which are Administration, Account, Art, Literature and Publications. A Cultural Officer or A Cultural Development Assistant has been attached to every District Secretariat and Divisional Secretariat in order to facilitate departmental activities at District and Divisional level. Further, Assistant Directors of Cultural Affairs have been appointed to several District Secretariats by now, and steps have been taken to extend the departmental services to villagers through the newly appointed Assistant Cultural Directors.
